The First Cut community project

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) generously supported the Friends of Salford Museums Association by funding events and activities relating to the canal and 'The First Cut' exhibition, which was on display at Salford Museum and Art Gallery from Saturday 8 October 2011 to Sunday 22 January 2012.
'The First Cut: Celebrating 250 years of Bridgewater Canal' project was aimed to engage communities along the canal corridor in it's history and significance today through creative activities and events.
Volunteers have collected stories relating to the canal. When archived, these will add to our material for future research, learning and projects.
Jane Dennerly ran textile workshops for people of all ages to create a large-scale applique hanging inspired by the canal. Jane has engaged with local people at numerous events and festivals throughout the summer and enabled participants to create their own individual contribution to it.
Creative Industries in Salford (CRIIS) were commissioned to work with young people to develop their media and film-making skills and produced a short film that is a contemporary take on the canal's history and importance to communities today.
As a key element, an iPhone app was launched in September 2011, encouraging visitors and local people to engage with the canal and it's history through up-to-date technology. It forms a canalside trail complete with information, pictures, sounds and challenges, and can be downloaded to your Apple mobile device free of charge.
Download the Bridgewater app from the iTunes App Store.
