Transition toolkit for closing schools

Schools can close for a variety of reasons ranging from low pupil numbers to conversion to academy status. The closure process varies significantly according to the circumstances of each individual school. Whatever the circumstances it is important that the closure process is properly managed and that there is a smooth transition for each pupil, whichever school they transfer to. This guidance has been produced for governing bodies and headteachers to support them in fulfilling their responsibilities in this process.

As well as identifying the actions which need to be undertaken, the toolkit also outlines a project management process to be followed by each school in partnership with the local authority.

A separate summary toolkit has been devised to cover the relatively new process by which schools can convert to become academies under the Academies Act 2010.

These documents, which can be downloaded below, are described as a toolkit, as they will need to be adapted for each school and situation. If properly adapted and methodically used, they provide a sound basis for planning and managing the closure and transition process.
