Foreword

Adopted Unitary Development Plan

It is my pleasure to introduce the City Council's Unitary Development Plan. I hope that everyone who uses it will find it accessible and helpful. The preparation and adoption of the UDP has now given the City, for the first time, a Development Plan which is contained in a single, up-to-date, Written Statement and Proposals Map. In this form, the Plan supersedes the many and varied elements which used to constitute the City's Development Plan, including the former County Structure Plan, the City's twelve Local Plans, and various Town Maps, all of which were prepared at different times, and in response to different legislative requirements. Since they mostly covered disparate parts of the City, and none of them related wholly and completely to the Local Planning Authority's area, they made up a "patchwork quilt" of plans which, effective though they were, I am very pleased to see entirely replaced by the UDP.

I am confident that the UDP will provide a sound basis for decision-making and action by all those involved in the planning and development of the City. It is a plan which highlights the opportunities and potential to be found in Salford, and encourages the process of renewal and regeneration in all its forms, by a variety of agencies. It is above all a plan which is intended to make a contribution to improving the quality of life of everyone who lives or works in the City, or visits it for recreational purposes. I commend it to you.
