Victoria Hinsley and Dane Yates

Course / Qualification Apprenticeship in Administration
Place of study Start Training

Dane and I began working for BOC Gases in January 2006 as modern apprentices in administration within the Document Imaging department based at the customer service centre in Worsley. Our main responsibilities were scanning, repairing, storing and retrieving scanned delivery notes, the system is called OSCAR- optical scanning and character recognition.

The delivery notes we receive are from branches and agents from around the UK and Northern Ireland. It is critical that delivery notes are available for customers to retrieve to ensure the customer experience is positive and BOC do not lose revenue by crediting deliveries that we are unable to prove.

In addition to our daily tasks we received support towards an NVQ in administration, the work for our NVQ was conducted outside of the working environment. We spent half a day a week working towards our technical certificate with Start Training in Swinton. The assessors at Start Training were always helpful, friendly and keen to encourage their learners to continuously improve their range of skills. We also received half a day internal training at BOC to gain business knowledge and awareness.

Yvonne at Start Training approached Dane and myself to participate in the design of the Where2nxt. Some of our ideas and designs have been chosen on the website.

We were also asked to come up with a name for the website. Myself, Dane and other members of the team chose a name and which was chosen and is now the name of this website; where2nxt!

During the workshops we got to meet a variety of learners from other training providers and put our team working skills to good use which I found very valuable and interesting.

Dane and myself have now completed our level two NVQ in administration and our twelve months within the Document Imaging department. Dane has been successful in his application for a position in the SureServe department (the gases used to dispense drinks in pubs and clubs) and I am looking forward to joining the Vitalair department (medical oxygen) in March of this year.

Both Dane and myself have decided to progress onto a level three Advanced Apprenticeship in customer service with Start Training to support our new roles in BOC.
