Lucy Donnelly-Gallagher
Environmental Education Officer

Environmental Education and Waste Awareness joined forces today as Callum and I spent the afternoon delivering a 'Talking rubbish' event at the Walkden Gateway. The community drop-in event was an opportunity for local people to ask questions, share ideas and raise issues regarding environmental crime and recycling in their area. It was great to meet so many people who care about the environment and want to make a difference in Walkden.

Wednesday 16 June

Sergeant Jason Wilkinson
Salford West Neighbourhood Policing Team

We have taken part in a number of warrants in the area which have led to drugs being discovered. A person has been arrested on suspicion of possessing cannabis and a Class A drug. A warrant was carried out at another address where a woman was arrested on suspicion of possessing Class A and Class B drugs. This is a firm message to those who break the law that their actions will not be tolerated by us or the community and they will be brought to justice.

High visibility patrols are continuing to walk the streets to provide reassurance to the community and act as a deterrent to criminals. Feel free to talk to the officers, they will gladly discuss any issues you may have about your neighbourhood.

The mobile police station was placed at Tesco from 9.00am. Can I encourage anyone who wants to talk to your local officer to do so. This is an ideal way to tell us how you want your neighbourhood policed and for members of the public to prioritise the issues that need tackling first in their area. The mobile station will be outside Tesco on Thursday and Friday from 9.00am to 4.00pm.

As a silver award eco-school, pupils and staff from James Brindley Primary School are dedicated to looking after their local environment and encouraging others to do the same. Today, Year 2 children from James Brindley took part in a Litter Bug activity, aimed at educating children about the importance of keeping our streets clean and highlighting the potential risks and hazards involved in litter picking out of school. The children worked their socks off to clean the school grounds and contributed some excellent ideas for spreading the message around the local community. Well done to everyone involved!

Paul Jones
One Stop Shop Manager

The One Stop Shop is a community training, advice and resource centre based on Hulton District Centre. Of the many services that are offered either by ourselves or by our partnership colleagues from Neighbourhood Management and the Health Improvement Team, this week's SNAP sessions offered by the One Stop Shop have been based around IT taster events. This has ranged from going online with ‘myguide' to simple digital photo editing in Photoshop. The One Stop Shop offers a range of IT training courses including:

  • A basic introduction to IT
  • A basic introduction to Microsoft Office
  • Both a basic introduction to and an advanced Photoshop training
  • CV writing workshops
  • Print and design services
  • Website building for local community groups and business

Today's event focused on getting to grips with IT Basics. In this session learners were taken through the process of navigating around the online ‘myguide' courses for internet shopping and internet banking. Said one of the attendees of today's taster session "You can teach an old dog new tricks". This particular user left feeling amazed at what it is possible to do both using a computer and online.

Malcolm Cooper
Environmental co-ordinator

This week is the Walkden SNAP, together with partners (GMP, GMFS, Citywest and Probation Service) and other organisations I have been involved in co-ordinating the effective approach to remove all:

  • Bulky items/white goods (i.e. fridge/freezer/washing machine/cooker)
  • Removal of graffiti
  • Fly tipping
  • Sweeping of all primary routes and secondary routes within Walkden North

Today I have attended morning briefing session at Blackleach Country Park to ensure the smooth running and supervision of the teams on the Walkden North estates.

Since Monday I have been monitoring all Street Cleansing teams in the area to ensure the high standards are met as set by Environment directorate (Liveability) and also discuss any issues arising from local residents.

Whilst monitoring the area the residents have made a conscious effort leaving many items out for collection for our bulky collection and electrical equipment teams. To date we have collected in excess of six tonnes in bulky waste and almost two tonnes of electrical equipment.

Additionally our Street Cleansing teams have been in the area to ensure all streets are litter picked and any fly tipping removed, which has resulted in six tonnes collected since the beginning of the week.

The graffiti has also been pulling out all the stops repainting a number NTL boxes which appear to be a magnet for the graffiti artist, and the concrete fencing at the back of the Brindley Arms Pub.

Saturday 19 June will be our final day of SNAP and we will be revisiting all areas to ensure all items have been removed, and areas cleansed.

Tuesday 15 June

Vinny Nash
Neighbourhood Manager - Little Hulton and Walkden

It's Tuesday morning and I have just returned from the second of five early morning briefings for all agencies. As Neighbourhood Manager in Little Hulton and Walkden each day can be varied and challenging but never less than enjoyable. Youth Service worked with a number of young people last night and reported positive feedback. Police colleagues have carried out a series of warrants and the community lunch went well with good attendance by residents groups. How varied is that!

A week of events, clean-ups, places to drop-in to get help and advice, a chance to meet new people and have a bit of fun. This website tells you day by day about what's happening in the North Walkden area.

We and our partners make it our mission to work together at all levels and I believe the week of action will help improve the lives of those living in the neighbourhood and that folks, is what it is all about!

Today's event focused on getting to grips with Photoshop. In this session learners were taken through the process of transferring a digital photograph from their camera into Photoshop where it was then digitally enhanced. The reason for this is that many camera users, whilst confident in taking photos often ask for help when it comes to transferring their images from their camera to their computer. By introducing them to Photoshop as well it is almost like giving them their own dark room to experiment in.

For those that attended today's event they left being impressed with what Photoshop is capable of offering, and this is only the tip of the Photoshop iceberg.

Monday 14 June

Sergeant Jason Wilkinson
Salford West Neighbourhood Policing Team

It's the second time a SNAP week has taken place in West Salford and having seen the benefits of the first one, the team are eager to get started. We and our partners are dedicated to serving residents to the best of our ability and I believe the week of action will help improve the lives of those living in the neighbourhood. Today, we have been patrolling the area, providing reassurance to the community as well as aiming to disrupt any criminal activity that may be taking place. We have also conducted stop searches with the Department for Work and Pensions. This has led to 20 people being stopped and searched although no arrests have been made. The mobile police station was placed at the Walkden Gateway from 8.00am where we spoke to numerous people regarding their concerns and issues. This facility is an ideal way to tell us how you want your neighbourhood policed and for members of the public to prioritise the issues that need tackling first in their area If you can't attend the mobile police station then there are numerous opportunities via police surgeries that take place across the city.

For more information on where and what time they take place, visit the GMP website.
