We are reading

2008 is the National Year of Reading. Here in Salford we will be building on the success of the original ‘We are reading’ that saw 10,000 copies of the award-winning ‘Private Peaceful’ by Michael Morpurgo distributed for free around the city.
Lots of exciting events will be happening across Salford to generate a buzz around reading, so keep a look out for things happening near you. Schools are getting involved with ‘Drop everything and read’ with pupils stopping whatever they’re doing to read a fun book for ten minutes. If you are a parent or carer you can really boost your child’s development by reading aloud to them each day so pick a fun story and spend some time with them.
The Great Salford Book Swap is starting soon with free packs of books being given out to businesses to kickstart book swapping. Bring your own books to make it bigger and better, or why not start a book reading group like Richard and Judy?
Later in the year you’ll also get the chance to be a published writer yourself by entering our story writing competition to find hot local talent.
Newspaper, blogs, books and magazines, it doesn’t matter what it is, just make sure you’re reading!
