What the council does
Equality and cohesion work is not solely the preserve of the corporate team. In fact, many of our services are involved in equality work and not just those for whom equality seems implicit in the job title such as the Salford Disabilities Services or the Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS).
A great deal of what councils do is to support the vulnerable, to intervene where assistance is needed, to intensively work with citizens at risk, or at disadvantage, at different times of their lives and in different circumstances. In many instances the success or failure of this work represents our progress in equalities. It also defines where we believe we can, and should, make a difference. For example equalities has an integral role in areas as diverse as end of life care as well as leaving care and Supporting People.
That means its all the more important that staff are aware of the varied needs of different communities and how they must shape service delivery - and conversely the implications that ignoring them may have on access and outcomes.
There are many examples of good and successful practice across the council and a sample of case studies is available to provide a flavour of the breadth of that work.
An employer of choice
As a major employer in the city, Salford City Council is committed to achieving a workforce that is both representative of the increasing diversity of the borough, and one that actively promotes tolerance and acceptance.
We are subject to a range of statutory duties relating to occupational equality, and obliged to publish our progress in a number of key areas such as the race, gender, age and disability breakdown of the workforce and their distribution, and the number of part time and full time staff by protected group. These requirements have been significantly strengthened by the Equality Act 2010. Above and beyond this, we believe it is in the fundamental interest of the organisation that we encourage a fair, welcoming and inclusive workplace.
This agenda is managed by the corporate Human Resources team and further information is available on the equality and workforce page.
