Pre-court disposals
Restorative disposal
This offers a quick and proportionate response a young person's low-level offending and allows victims to have a voice in how the offence is resolved. Using restorative justice techniques enables the young person to face up to the impact of their offence, by offering an apology and examine why the offence took place. Where appropriate, a plan is made for the young person to make good the wrong that was done in the offence. If further risk of offending is identified support will be offered by the Youth Offending Service to reduce such risk.
Reprimand
A reprimand is suitable for a first offence if it is not classed as a grave offence and the young person admits guilt. It is delivered by police the Youth Offending Service will attempt to contact and assess the young person's suitability for a prevention/intervention programme in order to reduce further risk of offending. Once a young person has received a reprimand they cannot be reprimanded again. For a second offence they must either be given a final warning or charged.
Final warning
The final warning scheme aims to divert young people from their offending behaviour before they enter the court system and is designed to do this by ending repeat cautioning and provide a progressive and effective response to offending behaviour. This is done by ensuring that the young person is bailed to attend the Youth Offending Service in order for assessments to be carried out and providing the most providing appropriate and effective interventions to prevent re-offending and ensuring that young people who do re-offend after being warned are dealt with quickly and effectively by the courts.
