Want to volunteer?
The Youth Offending Team (YOT) has three different but exciting opportunities for anyone who would like to work on a voluntary basis with young people who are involved in, or are at risk of, offending behaviour.
- Mentoring
- Referral Panel
- Mediation
What do mentors do?
As a mentor you will be matched with a young person and become a positive role model for them. You will help them to broaden their horizons, set personal goals and targets, and support the young person to develop and enhance life skills. The YOT will provide you with accredited training.

“My mentor give me a lift, a lot of help and support and I feel when I am out I can respect him"
Young person, aged 13 years
What do referral panel members do?
For people who live or work in Salford you could have the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge that would enable you to become a Referral Panel member. As a trained volunteer, your role would be to work as part of a team in order to decide a contract for the young person, in accordance with the requirements of their Referral Order. The contract is an agreement which enables the young person to have a better understanding for the consequences of their actions for themselves and others and to offer them the opportunity to make amends for the harm they have caused.
What do mediators do?
You will be given training that will equip you with the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to the breakdown of communication that can often occur between young people, victims, families, schools and the local community. Your role will be to help people to identify and resolve difficulties between themselves in an attempt to prevent situations from becoming more serious.
