Robes

The Mayor in her robes

When does the Ceremonial Mayor wear robes?

The robe is worn by the Ceremonial Mayor on all appropriate civic and ceremonial occasions, and whilst wearing them the Ceremonial Mayor will normally be accompanied by the mace.

The robe is a traditional Mayor's robe in red wool, trimmed with either Ermine or black velvet.

History

The robes of Lord Mayors, Mayors, Aldermen and councillors play a much more important part than is generally supposed.

The discipline, orderliness and freedom of the British nation has for centuries been held in the highest regard, and the Mayor's robes are the outward symbol of these qualities in local government.
