Salford Health Improvement Service

Making small changes to your lifestyle now can have a big impact upon your chances of becoming ill from conditions such as heart disease, stroke and cancer in the future.

It makes more sense to try to prevent these conditions. That’s why we provide support to residents to help them to stay healthy and well through our Health Improvement Connect Service. Wherever you live in Salford, we can provide one to one tailored support, and group-based activities within your local community to help you to improve your health and wellbeing in the following areas:

Physical activity

Exercise is the miracle cure we've always had, but for too long we've neglected to take our recommended dose.

People who exercise regularly have a lower risk of developing many long-term (chronic) conditions, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and some cancers.  Research shows that physical activity can also boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing your risk of stressdepression, and dementia.

To stay healthy, the UK Chief Medical Officers' Physical Activity Guidelines, on GOV.UK, state that adults should try to be active every day and aim to do at least 150 minutes of physical activity over a week, through a variety of activities.

All the activities we run in the Health Improvement Service are at a low level, and support people to take the first steps to get more active. There is a whole range of different activities for people to join, we’ll help you to find something that suits you.

Weight support and healthy eating

Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight is important for overall health and can help you prevent and control many diseases and conditions. If you are overweight or obese, you are at higher risk of developing serious health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. That is why maintaining a healthy weight is so important: It helps you lower your risk for developing these problems, helps you feel good about yourself, and gives you more energy to enjoy life.

Our Weigh Ahead course focuses on helping people to make small but sustainable changes to the way they eat. The course runs over five modules and you can join at any time.

Family weight management

Are you worried that your child may be overweight?

Obesity puts children at risk of medical problems that can affect their health now and in the future. These include serious conditions like type 2 diabeteshigh blood pressure, and high cholesterol — all once considered adult diseases.

Our Red Pepper family weight management course can support you as a family to look at how you can make small changes to your lifestyle, and even help your child to lower their weight.  We can provide support in a one-to-one or group setting.  We’ll also help your child to access physical activity that they find fun.

Emotional health and wellbeing

Our mental health encompasses our psychological, emotional and social wellbeing. This means it impacts how we feel, think and behave each day. Our mental health also contributes to our decision-making processes, how we cope with stress and how we relate to others in our lives. It impacts on our thoughts, behaviours and emotions. Being healthy emotionally can promote how effectively we can do important activities like work, school or care giving. It plays an important part in the health of your relationships and allows you to adapt to changes in your life and cope with adversity.

Connecting with other people in your community is a great way to improve your mental health as it helps to give you a sense of belonging and to share experiences and emotional support. Likewise, learning new skills or getting new hobbies can help boost your confidence and give you a sense of purpose. We provide a whole range of free activities in your community that can help you to do this. There’s something for everyone!
