A total of 88 local and mayoral candidates have been announced ahead of the Salford elections on Thursday 2 May 2024.
The candidates officially standing for Salford City Mayor are (in alphabetical order):
All candidates had a deadline of 4pm on Friday 5 April to submit their nomination papers.
Each registered voter in Salford will receive a City Mayor election booklet with an election address from all four candidates as well as voting information. The booklet will be delivered by post between Friday 19 and Friday 26 April.
Similarly, all voters across Greater Manchester (GM) including Salford will receive a mayoral address booklet about the six candidates standing for Greater Manchester Combined Authority Mayor. These booklets must be sent to all voters by law.
Salford residents choose one candidate in each mayoral election - Salford City Mayor and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority Mayor.
Salford residents also get to vote for a local councillor as a third are up for election – 20 seats – one from each of the city’s 20 wards. Voters choose one candidate in the election of a councillor for their own ward. There are occasions when a ward may have more than one vacancy which is the case in Ordsall where two councillors are up for election in May.

In order to vote in these important elections and have their say on who makes decisions affecting them, residents must be on the electoral register and have a valid form of Voter ID if voting in a polling station. With the deadline to register to vote fast approaching on Tuesday 16 April, residents are urged to check that they are registered to vote at their current address. Being registered for other council services (for example, council tax) does not mean residents are automatically registered to vote. It takes just five minutes to register to vote online.
Residents will also need to show a valid form of photo ID at the polling station. Voter ID can be a passport, driving licence, some types of bus pass or proof of age card. It must be an original and not a photocopy. Voters should check they have at least one form of ID on the list and expired ID can still be valid as voter ID as long as it still looks like you. If voters do not have valid voter ID, they can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate (VAC). The deadline for to apply for a VAC for these elections is 5pm on Wednesday 24 April.
This year Salford residents can vote in the following three elections:
Returning Officer Tom Stannard said: “Candidates have now been announced for the May elections and I would encourage all residents to vote and check they have photo ID.
“The polls open at 7am on Thursday 2 May and close at 10pm.
“Residents now have until midnight on Tuesday 16 April to register to vote, until Tuesday 17 April to apply for a postal vote and Wednesday 24 April to apply for free voter ID.
Those who have not registered cannot vote in the elections and those without valid photo ID can’t vote in a polling station. So make sure you plan today to make your mark and have your say in May.
