Youth Theatre

Part of Salford's Music and Performing Arts Service

There are currently three youth theatre groups running at the MAPAS Arts Centre at the Swinton High School.

These groups are:

  • Pre Junior Theatre Company
    Thursdays from 5.00pm to 6.00pm
    Ages six - eight
  • Junior Youth Theatre Group
    Thursdays from 6.00pm to 7.00pm
    Ages eight - 12
  • Senior Youth Theatre Group
    Thursdays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm
    Ages 12 - 19

All groups explore a variety of drama and theatre techniques. In the two junior sessions the group will cover improvisation, script work, narrative, mime, tableau work, movement, physical theatre, role-play and focus exercises. In the older youth group they will continue to develop these skills and also explore stylised theatre, mask work, forum theatre and montage.

All groups are regularly in performances and festivals throughout the year at various venues in Salford including the Quays Theatre at The Lowry.

Musical Theatre

The Musical Theatre group is available for pupils aged between 12 and 21. Students are required to audition to become members of the group. This involves singing, acting and dancing. A musical is performed annually and there are opportunities to perform at MAPAS Showcase concerts. The company also take LAMDA Musical Theatre examinations in March/April each year. To be a member of the group it is essential to participate in all three areas of the company - singing, dancing and acting.
