Black bin

Salford City Council provides a domestic refuse collection service (black bin) for all homes in the city.

What goes in your black bin

Only use your black bin to dispose of items that cannot be recycled such as:

  • Plastic bags
  • Plastic film trays
  • Margarine tubs and yoghurt pots
  • Cat litter
  • Dog waste - bag it and then put it the bin
  • Polystyrene
  • Disposable nappies

Please be aware that only one black bin is permitted at each household.

My bin has been missed, what should I do?

Please use our online reporting form as soon as possible. Where practical, alternative arrangements will be made.

If you've no room left in your bin, you can visit one of our rubbish tips. To remove large items, see our bulky waste page.

Get a new black bin

Use our online form to order a new bin. A £26.20 administration and delivery charge is payable for all new and replacement standard sized bins.

Request a new or replacement black bin

Exchanging your black bin for a bigger bin

Move from a small bin to a standard bin

If you'd like to exchange your smaller 140 litre bin for the standard 240 litre bin you will need to complete the request a new or replacement black bin form and pay £26.20. The small bin will need to be left in an accessible place at the front of the property so that it can be exchanged.

Move from a standard bin to a large bin

If there are more than six people living in your home or if somebody has a certain medical condition and you’re recycling everything you can, you may qualify for a larger black bin. There is a charge of £52.50 for a large black bin. To arrange this, you need to book an appointment for a waste awareness officer to visit your home. They can then order the bin on your behalf if you qualify.

When to put your bin out and collect it

Please do not put your bin out before 7pm the night before collection and collect it by 11pm on the day of collection.

By putting your bin out on the street only when necessary and bringing it in as soon as possible after collection, you can help reduce the likelihood of bins being stolen. Read more about our take it in policy.

What size wheelie bins are available?

We operate the following policy regarding the issue of wheelie bins for domestic properties:

  • The standard issue wheelie bin has a capacity of 240 litres.
  • A smaller 140 litre bin can be provided for the elderly, infirm or those living alone.
  • For properties with six or more occupants, a 360 litre wheelie bin may be issued, subject to the occupants proving they are committed to reducing their waste via recycling.
  • Only one black bin will be emptied per household.

Reduce, reuse, recycle

Did you know that around 100,000 bins are emptied throughout Salford each week producing about 2,000 tonnes of rubbish?

With your help, around 70 to 80% of Salford's domestic waste could be recycled so that it does not end up in landfill sites.

Salford City Council sees recycling as being very important and we are always looking for ways to provide you with easier access to recycling facilities.
