What is a children's centre?

Winton Children's Centre group

Children's centres deliver services across the city providing support for children from 0 to 5 and their families.

Centres bring together a range of professionals to deliver holistic services to all families and in particular those who are in most need. Children’s centres enable families to access support from midwives, health visitors, early years practitioners and family support as well as providing opportunities for training and help into employment.

Services focus on the following areas:

  • Child development and school readiness
  • Parenting aspirations, self esteem and parenting skills
  • Child and family health and life chances

Services provided by children's centres include:

  • Quality registered childcare and early learning. Including 15 hours free early education for three and four year olds, which will help your child to develop and be confident when they start school. This is offered either on site or through a local setting
  • Parenting and family support
  • Antenatal and postnatal healthcare advice from health visitors and midwives, including breastfeeding support, inroducing solids and healthy eating
  • Employment, training and job seeking advice from our partner Jobcentre Plus
  • Opportunities for volunteering and work experience
  • Lots of fun activities and the chance to talk to other parents and make new friends

Also don't forget that if you are on benefits new mums can get free vitamins, fruit and vegetables and milk through the healthy start scheme - ask your health visitor if you qualify.

There are centres all across the city based right in the heart of Salford's communities. Our friendly staff are always pleased to meet you, just call in to your nearest centre.

What our parents say:

"I recommend it (the centre) to every parent. I've made lots of friends who share experiences, and I don't feel silly asking questions. The staff are really friendly offering services and advice, and the children love coming here."
