Education, Health and Care Plans

Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP) are for children and young people with complex and severe special educational needs and/or disabilities.

What is an EHCP?

An EHCP will replace the statement of SEN. It will also replace the learning difficulties assessment (which applies in most post-16 settings).

An EHCP is a document that says what support a child or young person who has special educational needs should have.

Who will need an EHCP?

Not all children with special educational needs and/or disabilities will need an EHCP.

EHCPs are only for children and young people who need a lot more support than their school or college can usually give them.

What will an EHCP look like?

If your child has an EHCP it will say:

  • what they need support with
  • what education support they will get to help them to learn
  • what health support they will get
  • what social care support they may need
  • what things they want to do in the future
