How to pay your council tax

There are a number of ways you can pay your council tax bill. 

Direct debit 

Paying by direct debit is quicker, easier and better. Just give us the details once, and we'll do the rest. No need to remember to pay.

Online payments

You can pay your council tax bill online in complete confidence using our secure server. It’s even easier if you sign up for a Salford customer account.

You can make a telephone payment using your debit or credit card. Our automated payment service is available 24 hours a day.

Credit card charges
You will be charged 1.4% when making a payment with your credit card. There's no charge for debit cards or other payment methods. 

Other ways to pay

From your bank account

We recommend you allow three working days but check with your bank exactly how long it will take for the payment to reach us. The details you will need to set up a standing order or to make payment from your bank account are as follows:

  • Bank account name: Salford City Council
  • Your council tax reference number, which can be found on your bill or via your Salford customer account

Internet banking

You can use your own internet banking facilities to pay us. Please make sure that you quote the correct reference/account number.

PayPoint

You can make a payment at any PayPoint outlet by presenting your council tax bill with your payment to the retailer. This service is free.

At a Post Office

Payments may be made by debit card, cash or cheque (payable to Post Office limited) at any Post Office. This service is free

Please present your council tax bill to the cashier along with your payment - the bill contains a barcode that is used to record your payment.

When making payment at a Post Office or by PayPoint, please make your payment at least five days before the payment is due, so it will be credited to your account in time.

Do not send cash payments through the post, if you wish to make a cash payment use a Post Office or PayPoint outlet.

By cheque

Cheques should be made payable to 'Salford City Council'. Please ensure that your council tax account reference number is quoted on the back of your cheque. Your cheque should be posted to the Strategic Director of Corporate Business, Salford City Council, Unity House, Chorley Road, Swinton, Salford M27 5AW 

Payment from overseas

Payments can be made from an overseas bank account direct to Salford City Council's bank account. The information you need to do this is shown below:
