Salford has aspirations to become a Digital Council. It is using digital transformation to ensure services are quicker, easier and better for everyone. From the introduction of a transactional website and webchat to many other new and exciting digital developments, the council is empowering residents and improving access to information and services. A dedicated team has been set up to deliver improved customer services via Project Connect. We also want to make sure no one is left behind as digital becomes the way to access services, communicate with organisations, and interact with friends and family.

Shaping Our City is the name for our new approach where services across the council are thinking differently and providing quicker, easier and better experiences to customers, as well as working more efficiently. It involves saving money, using technology and responding to increasing customer expectations. We're seeing great results from our transformation programme.

We are strongly committed to digital inclusion, which is about making sure that residents have the capability to use the internet to do things that benefit them day to day - whether that’s individuals or community organisations.

To this end, we have developed various innovative initiatives as part of our Digital Everyone plan to ensure everyone gets the most out of digital technology.

Digital You is our partnership with Good Things Foundation, the UK’s leading digital and social inclusion organisation which helps people to use and engage with digital to improve their lives. They are working with community organisations to help reach people in the communities in which they live - trusted faces in local places – and help them become confident, capable and safe users of the internet day by day.

Good Things Foundation partnered with the Google Digital Garage bus tour in Greater Manchester which delivers free digital skills training. This is a place where anyone can come and learn how to harness the power of the internet to grow their business, develop new vocational skills or build their confidence online. The bus travelled to over 30 locations in Greater Manchester including places in Salford during February and March 2018. It selected Salford for its last stop, bringing the bus to MediaCityUK in April 2018.

We've created a great partnership working with Barclays on creating Digital Eagles which has resulted in a network of digital champions. We are the first council to work with Barclays in this way, so it’s really exciting.

Another key part of Salford’s ambition to become a Digital City is the creation of a brand new community website – MyCity Directory – which provides a new way to stay connected and make a difference in your neighbourhood. Residents, businesses and organisations are all invited to sign up and benefit from everything the city has to offer.

Our exciting new initiatives around creating digital communities were officially launched in January 2018 at our #DigitalSalford event. Find out more about the #DigitalSalford launch and watch a short video of the event
