As an employee of Salford City Council you can expect:

  • Annual leave - up to 33 days plus bank holidays, plus ability to carry forward five days to be taken in the following annual leave year
  • Banked leave - alternatively you can 'bank' five days of your annual leave each year to a maximum of 30 days to be enjoyed as and when you need them
  • Exam and study leave - employees are encouraged to undertake education, training and development. Where there are clear benefits to both Salford City Council and the individual, directors are authorised to grant leave as appropriate for the purposes of taking examinations and/or assessments and equivalent periods of paid study leave for preparation for examination and/or assessments
  • Appraisal - you will be appraised at least once a year and you will be involved in drawing up a personal development plan for yourself as a result
  • Training and development - we provide a wide range of training and development opportunities for staff in all aspects of their work. Many of these are related to occupational qualifications
  • Car loan scheme - the council operates a car loan scheme that is available to most employees who are essential or authorised casual users
  • Equal opportunities and diversity - we have a number of policies to ensure equal opportunities in all aspects of employment
  • Induction - this is an important part of the information that a new employee receives, and is designed to help you understand more about how the council works and what you can expect as an employee
  • Pension - Career Average Revalued Earnings (CARE)
  • Public duties - we can grant up to 18 days leave per year to employees who undertake public duties

Therefore we make every possible effort to work with our employees so that they can meet their personal responsibilities whilst continuing to make a valued contribution in their role.

Policies we have introduced to help us achieve this are:

  • Flexi-time - one of the most popular benefits! Our full time working week is 36 hours and if the post is eligible for flexible working you can work these hours anytime between 7.00am and 7.00pm, Monday to Friday. In addition, should you work more hours than required you can take up to two days flexi can be taken in each period (four weeks), subject to exigencies of the service
  • Home working - it is possible for some of our posts for duties to be carried out partly, if not entirely at home
  • Job share - all of our posts, unless otherwise stated, are available as job share posts
  • Maternity leave - you are entitled to 52 weeks maternity leave, the amount of maternity pay you will receive is dependent upon your individual circumstances
  • Paternity leave - our employees can take two weeks paternity leave, both of which are paid
  • Reduced working time policy - should your personal circumstances alter you may wish to work shorter hours, this policy will enable you to request this
  • Adoption leave policy - our employees can take up to 52 weeks off as adoption leave of which 26 weeks will be paid
  • Childcare vouchers - Computershare Voucher Services offers a flexible way to pay for a wide range of childcare benefits at reduced costs which both parents are entitled to
  • Carers leave - we can have up to five working days in a 12 month period
  • Compassionate leave - we can have up to three days paid compassionate leave in a 12 month period
  • Non-urgent domestic leave - unpaid leave can be granted in certain circumstances
  • Parental leave - this is statutory unpaid leave to allow parents to spend more time with their children when they are young
  • Time off for dependants - this is statutory unpaid leave to care for a dependant

Your health

The health and wellbeing of our employees is extremely important to us and therefore we provide a range of services to support them:

  • Physiotherapy service - for employees with musculoskeletal conditions
  • Counselling service - the employee counselling service provides confidential access to an independent counsellor via a free phone number
  • Occupational health service - available to all staff by referral
  • Medical screening - paid time off will be granted for the purposes of cancer screening
  • Medical appointments - paid time off, up to two hours
  • Eye care scheme - employees who need glasses for VDU use will receive a financial contribution towards the cost of the glasses
  • Leisure membership - reduced membership to our leisure centres
  • The Disability Leave Scheme (DLS) - up to six weeks paid additional leave

Sickness - your entitlement to sickness allowance is:

  • During first year of service: one month full pay and (after completing four months' service) two months' half pay
  • During second year of service: two months' full pay and two months' half pay
  • During third year of service: four months' full pay and four months' half pay
  • During fourth and fifth year of service: five months' full pay and five months' half pay
  • After five years' service: six months' full pay and six months' half pay

Your leisure

As a large employer, we are able to attract a wide range of non-employment related benefits for our employees. These include:
