What is Kickstart?

Kickstart is a new £2 billion Government scheme which will create hundreds of thousands of high-quality paid work placements to help young people develop the necessary skills and experience for their future careers.

Kickstart is one of a number of measures announced by Chancellor to help the UK respond to the economic and labour market challenges that have arisen as a result of the pandemic.

Salford City Council want to help employers to use Kickstart to create new 6-month job placements for young people. There are zero costs to employers with funding available to cover 100% of the salary costs relevant to National Minimum Wage for 25 hours a week, plus associated employer National Insurance contributions and employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions.

The job placements should support young people to develop the skills and experience they need to find work after completing and there is also £1,500 per job placement available for setup costs, support and training.

As part of the scheme we are also looking to develop consistent and quality wrap-around support and training that will benefit young people on placements, using some of the funds available.

Funding is available following a successful application process. Applications must be for a minimum of 30 job placements.

If you are unable to offer 30 job placements, you can partner with Salford City Council or an approved Kickstart Gateway organisation.

To register your interest with Salford City Council or for more information please email sebastian.young@salford.gov.uk or david.timperely@salford.gov.uk

As soon as we receive interest from other employers for minimum of 30 job placements, we will submit a joint application to The Department of Work and Pensions.

Please note that if your business is not based in Salford, we would advise you to contact your local authority or an approved Kickstart Gateway organisation. Get more information for finding a Kickstart Gateway

Currently Salford City Council are supporting specific sectors such as construction (including, facilities management), digital and creative media, health and social care, environmental and green economy, voluntary and community sector, if we are unable to be the ‘Gateway’ for your roles we can signpost you to another organisation who may be able to support you.
