Temporary traffic lights are being trialled near Worsley Courthouse roundabout to try and improve traffic flow.
It is Salford’s busiest roundabout with nearly 14,000 vehicles a day passing through it in peak times.
Remodelling work was carried out in 2020 to manage the anticipated increase in traffic from the opening of RHS Garden Bridgewater. Traffic has seen a two per cent increase since then but drivers from Worsley and Eccles still struggle to find a gap in traffic to safely join the roundabout.
The temporary lights on Worsley Brow are pausing traffic from the M60, Leigh Road (A572) and Walkden Road (A575).
This allows vehicles on Worsley Road (A572) and Barton Road (B5211) to safely join the roundabout, giving all drivers a fair and equal chance to use the roundabout.
Cameras and sensors carefully watch traffic flows and adjust the lights as necessary to get the best traffic flow possible.
Data is being collected throughout the trial to see what impact the lights have on traffic flow and if successful the temporary lights, could be replaced with permanent lights, subject to funding being available.
This trial of temporary traffic lights initially ran from 21 February 2023 for six months and has since been extended for a further 12 months.
We’d like to hear your feedback on this trial. Please email your comments to salfordroadworks@salford.gov.uk
