Protect yourself from flu this winter

Getting a flu vaccination is one of the best ways you can protect yourself, your family and the community and help take pressure off the NHS and social care this winter.

COVID-19 is unlikely to fade away this winter, meaning we will see coronavirus and flu circulating at the same time. Unfortunately, those people most at risk from flu – the over 65s, people under 65 with long-term health conditions and pregnant women - are also those who are most vulnerable to coronavirus.

Flu weakens your immune system and this can last for up to six months. It therefore puts you at more risk of serious effects of COVID-19.

GPs will contact their patients who need a flu vaccination. Please take it up and urge family and friends who are offered one by their GP or midwife to do the same. Flu vaccinations are offered to people over 65, people under 65s with long-term health conditions and pregnant women. Children in years two and three at school – and for the first time those in year seven – will be offered the vaccine by nasal spray.

If there is sufficient vaccine available, once these priority groups have been vaccinated, it will be offered to all 50 to 64 year olds.

You can also get a vaccine through your local pharmacy (costs apply).

If you have any coronavirus symptoms such as a temperature, a continuous cough or a loss of smell or taste, on the day of your appointment to have a flu vaccination, please cancel it and do not attend. Follow the NHS guidance on what to do if you have COVID-19 symptoms.

Myths about the flu vaccination

It is not a live vaccine, so it doesn’t give you flu to build up antibodies.

It won’t stop you getting the flu but it will make your symptoms less severe and reduce the risk of serious complications.

The vaccine takes ten days to work so if you get sick immediately after the vaccination it’s something you caught around the same time. It will not be caused by the vaccination.

You may have a slight reaction to the vaccine – you might feel like you have a cold coming on or a sore arm. This is normal and will quickly pass.

The NHS website has more information about flu.
