COVID-19: Rapid testing for people who have no symptoms and feel well

COVID-19 affects people in different ways. Some people can become extremely ill while others show no symptoms at all and unknowingly pass the virus on to others.

Rapid tests can find these cases where there are no symptoms and help to stop the spread. The tests are quick and easy and results show in 30 minutes. You can do them at home or at one of our rapid test centres and it’s recommended you do them twice a week.

You can collect free boxes of home test kits from:

  • Eccles, Pendleton, Swinton and Walkden Gateways and Broughton Hub (libraries)
  • Broughton, Irlam, Eccles, Swinton and Pendlebury and Worsley Leisure Centres (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm)
  • Pharmacies (you need to provide a code to collect a kit from a pharmacy. Get a collect code online or call 119).
  • Our rapid testing sites (you can also have assisted tests at these centres if you prefer)
  • Workplaces, schools and colleges

You can also order testing kits to be delivered to your home.

Full guidance can be found on GOV.UK.

These tests are only designed to identify cases where there are no symptoms. If you have any COVID symptoms, or feel unwell in any way, please book a PCR test instead. You can book a PCR test on the GOV.UK website or by calling 119.

IMPORTANT: Please do not book a rapid coronavirus test if any of the following applies:

  • You feel unwell or you have symptoms of coronavirus, such as a high temperature, a new continuous cough, a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste. If you start to show any of these symptoms, it is really important that you and your close contacts self-isolate and you book a free COVID-19 test.
  • You are self-isolating for ten days because you have already tested positive or you've been in close contact to someone with coronavirus.
  • You are under the age of 16. At present, we will not be testing young adults and children. Please note that under 16s are also not permitted to attend rapid COVID testing centres unless they are a young carer.
  • You have recently returned from abroad and want a test to shorten your self-isolation. You need to book a test through the Test to Release for international travel scheme instead.

What to do if you test positive

If you test positive, you and anyone you live with should self-isolate immediately. You need to report your rapid lateral flow test result on GOV.UK as soon as possible and then get a PCR test to confirm your result – get a PCR test to check if you have coronavirus on GOV.UK

Continue to self-isolate until you get the result of the PCR test. Follow the advice you're given when you get the result.
