Being healthy is important for us all. Salford City Council is keen to promote a healthy lifestyle to the residents and visitors of the city. 

There are often mixed messages surrounding healthy eating in the media. This page will direct you to more detailed sources of information that can really help you in making healthier food choices and becoming more active. It is important to eat a well-balanced diet, but what does this mean?

There are five main food groups, which are listed below, and a healthy diet should consist of food from each of these groups:

  • Bread, cereal (including breakfast cereals) and starchy foods (eg potatoes)
  • Fruit (including fresh fruit juice) and vegetables
  • Meat and fish 
  • Milk and dairy foods
  • Fat and sugar

It is difficult to know in what proportion these foods should be eaten and to assist with this the Food Standards Agency have designed the Eatwell Plate.

The Food Standards Agency recommends eight tips for eating well:

  • Base your meals on starchy foods, eg bread, cereals, rice, pasta, potatoes
  • Eat lots of fruit and vegetables (recommended ‘5 A Day' programme)
  • Eat more fish
  • Cut down on saturated fat and sugar
  • Try to eat less salt (no more than 6g a day)
  • Get active and try to be a healthy weight
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Don't skip breakfast
