Greenspace strategy monitoring

The Salford greenspace strategy supplementary planning document (SPD) identified the following local standards:

  • all households should be within 500 metres walking distance of a local natural greenspace (LNGS)
  • all households should be within 2,000 metres walking distance of a strategic natural greenspace (SNGS)
  • all households should be within 400 metres walking distance of a local equipped area for play (LEAP)
  • all households should be within 1,000 metres walking distance of a neighbourhood equipped area for play (NEAP)
  • all households should be within 1,200 metres walking distance of a neighbourhood park
  • all households should be within 3,200 metres walking distance of a district park
  • at least 0.92 hectares of sports pitches (a new local standard from the Playing Pitch Assessment 2007 replacing the previous standard of 0.73 hectares) should be provided per 1,000 population across the city

Definitions for each of these local standards are available in the Salford greenspace strategy SPD. This document also identifies existing sites that meet one or more of the local standards and proposed sites to be improved.

The table below shows how Salford is performing against the local greenspace standards. Updates will appear on this page when available to show how the situation has changed over time.

Since April 2006 the level of greenspace has generally improved particularly for district and neighbourhood parks. The monitoring demonstrates that improvements in the level of provision are restricted by an increase in the number of residential properties in the city.

A partial review was completed in 2011 and a detailed review was completed in 2007. A summary of each review can be found in the downloadable documents section at the bottom of this page.
