Understanding your school budget training course

This session is delivered by management accountants from the city council and is essential for governors on committees that deal with school finances.

Central government will introduce a national schools funding formula in the next spending review period to ensure that schools in similar circumstances and with similar intakes receive similar levels of funding. To pave the way for this, the government have implemented a simplified, transparent and consistent funding formula to be used to calculate schools budgets, and to have a greater focus on the needs of pupils.

This new schools funding formula was introduced on 1 April 2013 and is significantly different from Salford's previous formula. Governors need to know the changes and how a schools budget is calculated. This course will include:

  • The new funding formula system
  • Schools block funding
  • Early years block funding
  • High needs block funding
  • An overview of notional special education needs (SEN) funding
  • Our current position
  • The Department for Education (DFE) review of the new formula and arrangements for 2014 to 2015
