Salford is one of the world’s most attractive cities for digital enterprise. Huawei recently announced their move into new offices in the city, responding to surging demand from local and regional clients.
Telecoms group TalkTalk relocated their headquarters from London to Salford Quays last year, moving hundreds of staff north. This move resulted in TalkTalk becoming one of the biggest British companies to swap a London HQ in favour of another major city.
In September 2019, The Landing, at MediaCityUK, became home to a new Vodafone Innovation Hub and technology incubator as part of their commitment to Greater Manchester as one of seven UK gigacities.
The city is investing in artificial intelligence, new networks and immerging technologies. This year the UK’s first commercial 5g network was launched in Salford and MediaCityUK is set to double in size by 2030 with a further £1billion investment. Whilst investment is increasing, Salford City Council is focusing on skills and infrastructure. The Digital You initiative is bringing the benefits of the digital world to 8000 of the city’s residents to help transform their lives.
Over 1,100 Salford residents attended supported digital courses and workshops in 2018, helping close the digital inclusion gap. The city is investing in residents, enabling them to become confident, capable and safe users of the internet.
Salford’s ambition is to be a fully connected digital city by 2021, linking 100% of its residents with access to high speed internet through fibre or radio networks.
The investment in digital technologies creates new jobs and opportunities for the people of Salford. MediaCityUK is home to the greatest concentration of digital talent outside London with 250 businesses employing over 7000 people.
