Housing benefit, council tax benefit and Council Tax Reduction scheme

  • Housing benefit provides help with your rent
  • Council tax reduction has replaced council tax benefit from 1 April 2013 and provides help with your council tax
  • Council tax benefit ceased on 31 March 2013

The easiest and quickest way to make a new claim for housing and council tax reduction is to do it online.

Government changes to housing benefit will affect some people from April 2013. Council tax benefit ended on 31 March 2013 and has been replaced by the Council Tax Reduction scheme, from 1 April 2013.

The council does not deal with claims for other benefits such as Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance - these are dealt with by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) or your local Jobcentre Plus.
