Benefits administration

Housing and council tax benefit

The council administers housing and council tax benefit on behalf of the government. This includes:

  • Housing Benefit - help with your rent
  • Council Tax Benefit (including Second adult rebate) - help with your council tax

The easiest and quickest way to make a new claim for Housing and Council Tax Benefit is to make a telephone claim.

There are some government changes to housing benefit that will affect people living in privately rented accommodation from April 2011.

The council does not deal with claims for other benefits such as Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance - these are dealt with by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) or your local Jobcentre Plus.
