New SENCO Training

The SEND Leaders Team are delighted to announce the NEW SENCO training. The training is being offered to any SENCO in the city, across all phases, to support consistency of practice. 

The aim of the course is to empower Salford SENCOs who are new to role or new to Salford. 

However, this has also been opened to any SENCO who may like more support or would like to join the SEND Leaders Team. This course is designed to: 

  • Provide essential information to new SENCOs on managing SEN systems and provision
  • Develop practical working knowledge of the role
  • Provide an overview of Salford systems, including local procedures and signposting to partner agencies
  • Enable opportunities for new SENCOs to network and access peer support 

Duration:

  • Session one – two hours 
  • Session two – two hours
  • Session three – two hours
  • Session four (New to SENCO Training) – six hours 30 minutes

EAL, EAL and SEND: Ensuring that we are getting this right

Delivered by:

Salford Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS)

Session content:

A training session for SENCOs, EAL Co-ordinators, Teachers and TA’s. 

This training session will focus on English as Additional Language children who are not making expected progress, and what steps schools need to take to ensure that the right provision is put in place to support these children. The objectives of the session will be:

  • Understand the English proficiency journey of an EAL child across all four skills
  • Assessment and Tracking of EAL children
  • Understand reasons why an EAL child might not be making expected progress but is not SEN
  • Induction of International New Arrival pupils and effective communication with parents
  • How to work with interpreters effectively
  • Cultural factors to be aware of when raising SEND with parents/guardians

Cost:

Free for all maintained schools and schools with an SLA. There will be a charge of £100 for other schools/settings. Non-attendees will be charged £45.

SENCO Forum – Primary and Secondary

Session content:

The Salford SENCO Forums provide an opportunity for all SENCO’s across the city to meet face to face to network, receive updates from the local authority and participate in additional CPD. We plan to continue to share LA information, invite key services to share updates, develop a consistency of practice and procedure across our Salford schools, and offer training opportunities where appropriate.

It is our aim that SENDCo’s from both Primary and Secondary settings will meet termly, face to face with potential follow up sessions planned via Microsoft Teams. Age phases will split into smaller groups where necessary.

There is no charge to attend the forum and refreshments will be provided.

An agenda will be shared with each attendee one week prior to the Forum date.

Adaptive Teaching - high quality inclusive teaching

This session is aimed at supporting school staff to develop their understanding of Adaptive Teaching strategies, exploring how they can be used to support children and young people in class. Throughout the session, delegates will discuss current research about adaptive teaching and how this links to teaching standards and the SEND CoP. Delegates can be given the opportunity to discuss key concerns and how best to support using examples of practice from local settings.

Collective Responsibility

This session is aimed at school leaders including middle leaders. The aim is to raise awareness of SEND across settings from all who have leadership and management responsibilities. The training covers statutory duties, the graduated approach and quality assuring.

Effective use of in class support (TA/LSA)

Session content:

This session is aimed at teaching staff at all stages of their career. It is also beneficial training for Teaching Assistants / Learning Support Assistants to support pedagogy around the role. The session covers the TA standards, different layers of support (EEF) along with practical guidance on supporting within the classroom.

Exam Access Arrangements

Session content:

This session is aimed at secondary school and post-16 staff to understand the role of the SENCo in access arrangements. The session will cover any changes to JCQ guidelines for the year, relevant forms and JCQ inspections. This session can be delivered face to face, downloaded for self-led delivery and is also available as a narrated download on the SEND Teams network.

Getting to grips with SEN Governance

Session content:

This session is aimed at SEN link governors, Chair/vice chairs and /or the whole governing body/trust. The session will explore how SEND relates to the 3 core functions of effective governance. Delegates will develop a basic awareness of SEND and consider their strategic role in supporting the development of SEND in school.

SEND Law: Lawful or Unlawful?

This session is aimed at school/post 16 staff who would like to know more about the framework around SEND legislation in education and improve their confidence in this area in order to empower their practice and decision making. Supporting Target Setting for SEND Learners

Understanding the K Code – SEND Banding

This session aims to explain the range of support that comes with adding a child to the SEND register. We consider when is the right time to add a child and then explore what Bands A,B,C are and the expectations that come with it.
