Council tax discount for carers

If you are a carer of someone who is not your partner, spouse or a child under 18 and you live in the same home as them, you may be able to get either a 25% or 50% discount on your council tax.

To get the discount you must care for the person for an average of 35 hours per week or more. 

The person you care for must also be getting one of the following benefits: 

  • Attendance Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance – care component (highest or middle rate)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment
  • Personal Independence Payment – daily living component (standard or enhanced rate)
  • Increase to a disablement pension under Section 104 of the Social Security Contributions and Benefits Act 1992 at the highest rate set by Regulation 19 of the Social Security (General Benefit) Regulations 1982
  • Increase in a constant attendance allowance under Article 14 of the Personal Injuries (Civilians) Scheme 1983 or Article 14(1)(b) of the Naval, Military and Air Forces etc. (Disablement and Death) Service Pensions Order 1983
