This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings (also known as D-Day) on 6 June 1944. Across the country major commemorations and events were held as the nation came together to remember D-Day.

In Salford we held a special commemorative event which was free and open to the public.

Free community event

  • Date: Thursday 6 June 2024
  • Time: 8.30pm to 10pm
  • Where: Front lawns at Salford Civic Centre

D-Day veteran, Salford Ceremonial Mayor, Salford City Council Chief Executive, Salford City Mayor and members of the Armed Forces stood at the front of Salford Civic Centre in attendance at the D-Day 80 commemoration on 6 June 2024

The event featured a specially commissioned film projected onto our Civic Centre building. This moving image and music show displayed magnificent military footage from the era as a fitting tribute to those who served and fought for their country. City leaders also delivered special sermons and tributes to mark the anniversary as Salford remembers D-Day. There was also a range of food and drink vendors which was on-site.

Guests were encouraged to bring their own chairs or picnic blankets to sit on and experience what was a very moving commemoration.

Free car parking was available at the back of Salford Civic Centre.

Thanks to everyone that joined us for this special commemorative event as we came together as a city to remember and commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

Please be advised that some of the imagery used as part of the film and light projection is of a graphic nature and may be distressing for some.
