Apply for a Selective Licence

Landlords who rent out a property in certain areas of Salford, must obtain a licence from Salford City Council.

You can apply online for a Selective Licence by following the three step process below. Guidance notes for each step are available at the bottom of the page.

You do not need to wait for Step 1 to be completed before completing Step 2.

Please note: if you are going to manage the property yourself and hold the licence you must complete both step 1 and step 2.

Step 1: Register the manager of the property

The manager of the property should complete this section. This may be an employed 'Managing Agent' or the landlord if they manage their own property.

Have you registered as a property manager before with Salford?

If you have, you do not need to register again. Your ID number will be re-activated when you provide us with a new DBS. 

If you haven’t registered before, please complete the online form. 

Step 1: Register as the manager

Step 2: Register as the proposed licence holder

The person who is going to hold the licence will complete this form.

If you have, you do not need to register again. Your ID number will be re-activated when you provide us with a new DBS.

Step 2: Register as the licence holder

Check to see if your licence holder is already registered

Step 3: Register the properties

Anyone can complete this step and you must have a manager ID number (obtained from step 1) and a proposed licence holder ID number (obtained from step 2).

Step 3: Register the property

What happens once you have made an application

Your application will be assessed to confirm that you need a licence and to ensure that the correct type of application has been made. If we approve you will be granted a licence subject to licensing conditions.

We aim to issue the licence within 30 working days of a valid application, however, this time frame is liable to change.

What you must do

You must let certain persons know in writing that you have made this application and give them certain information. Please see the guidance notes: Apply for a HMO Licence below, for further information on who you need to give information to and what information you need to give them.

Tacit consent will not apply

It is in the public interest that we process your application before it can be granted. If you have not heard from us within one month of making an application you should contact us.
