Core JSSNA: Population

What is included?

The population section of the Core JSSNA explores the demographics and other characteristics of Salford's residents. It also provides summaries on deprivation and other wider determinants of health, offering context to the local population's health and wellbeing. Understanding our community is crucial for ensuring public funds are used effectively and targeted appropriately.

Salford has seen many changes over recent years. After decades of population decline, the trend reversed at the turn of the century, with Salford becoming the fastest growing area in the north of England. The city has attracted people from across the UK and overseas who now call Salford home.

This section also considers the overall health of our population, how it varies across the city and how it differs from other areas.

This section is divided into the following parts:

Deprivation covers a broader range of disadvantage than poverty, which is about a lack of financial resources. Deprivation can also refer to a lack of basic necessities including education, access to services, employment or adequate housing.

Many of these are moving in the wrong direction.’ Please also see The Wider Determinants of Heath 2024 (Adobe PDF format, 2.5mb) for a more detailed report.
