This is in support of Salford City Council’s wider aspirations to make improvements to some of the walking routes and outdoor spaces around Salford Quays as part of an Inner Loop.
The initial engagement explored ideas around enhancing the overall appearance of Mariners Canal, by introducing softer landscaping to support biodiversity - as well as reviewing how people used the space and find their way through the area.
Responses to the first phase of consultation indicated that people’s priorities for Mariners Canal are:
In response to those priorities, a set of proposed designs were developed for the area, prioritising retaining and enhancing the canal’s green character – including with additional planting and wildlife features. In addition, the designs sought to ensure Mariners Canal remains a relaxing space in the urban landscape whilst also improving privacy for current residents. Feedback also emphasised that Mariners Canal should be accessible to all. As a result, the updated proposals include improved and widened shared pathways (for walking and cycling) and better located seating areas, ensuring an inclusive and welcoming space for people to relax or move through.
During November and December 2023 people were asked to review the design proposals, share their views, and help refine them - as part of a second phase of consultation.
Now that the consultation has concluded, we will analyse and review all the feedback we have received before finalising our proposals. The resulting detailed plans will then be costed, and relevant funding opportunities will be explored. We will continue to keep all those who took part in the consultation updated on progress.
