Salford City Council seeks public input for future development plans

  • Salford City Council is seeking public input for part two of its Local Plan, which aims to shape the city's future development.
  • The plan will consider where new housing and employment development should go, the type of housing that should be provided and allocate sites for different types of development.
  • Residents are invited to an initial consultation until 24 January 2024, providing feedback on what the plan should include.
  • Suggestions for potential development sites and important Local Green Spaces are also welcome.
  • Sustainability, health, and equality considerations are being explored, and public comments are encouraged.
  • All responses received during the consultation period will be considered in the drafting of the local plan, with a further public consultation expected in the summer of 2024.

Salford City Council is embarking on an exciting journey to shape the city's future, and they want your input.

With part one of the Local Plan already adopted earlier this year, the council is now focusing on part two - the Core Strategy and Allocations. This planning strategy will outline the development needed for the city and where this should go.

Part two of Salford’s Local Plan will complement Places for Everyone which involves nine Greater Manchester districts. This comprehensive plan for the sub-region sets housing requirements and allocates major sites for development, has reached an advanced stage in its production and is expected to be adopted in the first half of 2024.

To ensure that part two of the local plan reflects the community's aspirations and priorities, the council is inviting residents to participate in an initial consultation, open until 24 January 2024. The council is particularly interested in receiving feedback on what should be included in the plan and has suggested that this could include a vision for Salford, policies on housing needs, office and industrial development, and improving town centres such as Eccles, Walkden, Swinton and Pendleton.

Additionally, the council is asking people to suggest potential development sites and important Local Green Spaces that people think should be protected. Sustainability, health, and equality considerations in the plan's preparation are also being explored, with the council welcoming public comments.

All responses received during the consultation period will be carefully considered in drafting part two of the local plan. A further public consultation on the draft plan is expected in the summer of 2024.

Councillor Mike McCusker, Lead Member for Planning, Transport and Sustainable Development, said: "In Salford, we believe that the best way to plan for the future is by involving the community every step of the way. We want our residents to have a real say in shaping the development of our city. That's why we're calling on everyone to participate in this crucial consultation process for part two of our Local Plan.

"Our vision is to create a fairer Salford that meets the needs of its residents and provides them with an exceptional quality of life. By engaging in this consultation, you can influence what is included in this plan, which sites are allocated for development and which green spaces should be protected. We are also keen to hear your thoughts on sustainability, health and equality in our planning strategy.

“This is an incredible opportunity for the people of Salford to have their voices heard and shape the city's future development. Let's come together and create a Salford that we can all be proud of."
