Trafford Road family fun day celebrates Salford's latest Bee Network addition

Join us for an exciting day of family-friendly activities at the Trafford Road Family Fun Day on Sunday 1 October at Ordsall Park to celebrate the newest addition to Salford's Bee Network.

Ahead of the event, local schools and groups are making different coloured wildflowers which will be displayed in a pop-up meadow on the day, ready to be pollenated…perhaps by a bee. These groups include:

  • Primrose Hill Primary School
  • Ordsall Community Arts
  • Growing Togetherness Seedley Pavilion
  • Oasis Hub, St Clements Church and community centre
  • Oasis Academy St Joseph's Primary School
  • The Friends of Ordsall Park

Organised in partnership with Salford-based companies From The Other and Walk The Plank, the day will be packed with live music, entertainment, and interactive experiences, and promises to be a pleasurable time for all. From 11am to 3pm, Ordsall Park will come alive with the sounds of talented locally based artists. Enjoy live performances from:

  • The Height: A three piece alt indie rock band hailing from the musical mecca of Salford consisting of John Denton on Vocals/Lead Guitar, Brandon Greenhalgh on Bass and Ted Ellis on Drums. (The Height on Instagram)
  • Manchester Family Fun Presents Yemi Bolatiwa’s Family Jam Band: As seen on CBeebies the Family Jam band take to the stage for an uplifting family-friendly set with live music, interactivity and footloose fun!   • Playhouse Project featuring MC Kwasi
  • At Home With Lilac: Formed by Manc couple Lois Holmes and Isaac Walbrooke in 2020, At Home With Lilac fuses influences from neo-soul, alt-rock and house, to forge a forward-thinking sound that's already making waves. (At Home with Lilac on Instagram)
  • JD Dance: JD DANCE is a local community dance school, providing classes for children ages two to 16, JD Dance creates a safe environment for children to learn new skills, have fun and lots of performance opportunities which improves confidence. (JD Dance on Instagram)

The festivities continue with a range of exciting activities for all ages. Families with children can experience the thrill of the children’s amusement park and challenge themselves on a climbing wall. Additionally, bring your bike for a free MOT to ensure it's in top condition. You can also try riding an electric bike, offering a unique and eco-friendly way to explore the area. Street theatre company Artizani will be bringing their interactive installation The Bees along too.

Attendees can discover the recently installed CYCLOPS on Trafford Road, an innovative infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians. Join a guided ride with a qualified ride leader and experience the convenience and accessibility of this improved route to Manchester United FC, The Quays, The Lowry, or MediaCityUK. Choose from three time slots: 11.15am, 12.15pm, or 1.15pm, and register in advance.

Trafford Road, which connects Salford and Trafford, has undergone infrastructure upgrades to provide a smoother and safer commute for residents and visitors, these changes include:

  • Every junction, crossing and bus stop along Salford’s two-mile stretch of Trafford Road has been improved and upgraded to ease traffic flow and make it safer for all users.
  • Extra pedestrian and cycle friendly crossings have been introduced and all crossings along the road are now controlled by signals to make them safer to use.
  • Twenty-five street lighting columns have been replaced and drains along the route cleaned and improved.
  • New segregated cycle lanes have been added and the point where cyclists cross the tram tracks at Furness Quay has been adjusted to make it safer.
  • The whole length of the road has been resurfaced with new, clearer road markings and signage and the road has been designated a red route clearway to keep traffic flowing. It means drivers who park on footpaths can be given a fixed penalty notice.
  • Every bus stop now has a shelter and high kerb to make getting onto and off buses easier and five new waiting areas have been created so passengers don’t block the paths. All the footpaths have also been re-laid.

Trafford Road is one of the busiest roads in Salford and the work has improved its capacity to handle road traffic as well as providing better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. It’s part of a Greater Manchester-wide programme to create the largest joined up system of walking and cycling routes in the UK to reduce the number of cars on the road and ease congestion for everyone.

Lead Member for Planning, Transport and Sustainable Development, Councillor Mike McCusker said: "Salford City Council is fully committed to playing our role in helping achieve national NetZero goals and we are immensely proud to announce the latest addition to our continuously expanding Bee Network. This significant development, which has helped connect Salford and Trafford, will enhance accessibility to public transport for both Salford residents and visitors alike.

“In addition, we are delighted to host an exciting event that unites our community for a day filled with entertainment and activities. This event will not only be enjoyable for all but will also serve as a platform to highlight the numerous advantages of sustainable transportation options. Together, we can embrace a greener future for Salford."
