Local list

The city council has identified a provisional local list of around 500 buildings, structures and features that it considers are of value due to their contribution to the local street scene or their local historical association.

Whilst these buildings, structures and features do not enjoy the protection of statutory listing, which is the responsibility of English Heritage, the council considers that the buildings, structures and features are of local value.

The city council's provisional local list can be downloaded below. Work is continuing on this list and in due course it will be updated to incorporate descriptions and photographs of items on the local list.

English Heritage has indicated its intention to publish guidance for the identification and management of local heritage assets and the consolidation of these assets as a local list in 2011. It is intended that the guidance will set out advice and best practice on how to strengthen the role of local heritage assets as material considerations in planning decisions by providing guidance on, amongst other things, the selection criteria to be used in assessing whether or not a heritage asset is worthy of inclusion on a local list and how best to carry out public consultation when drawing up a local list.

When the new guidance from English Heritage is published, the city council intends to use this to inform a comprehensive review of all the information the city council has assembled to produce and consult upon a definitive local list. In advance of this the city council invites the public to suggest other buildings, structures or features that they consider should be included on the local list. This local list will then be periodically updated and consulted upon.
