Being a parent is an amazing job but it’s not always an easy one.

Supporting a child or young person with additional needs or a neurodevelopmental need may pose questions that a parent or carer had not expected and we have heard from families that it can be helpful to seek advice, ask questions and discuss different experiences.

Our Salford Family Relationship practitioners offer a number of sessions to families which give the opportunity to consider approaches to supporting your child to learn new skills, feel supported in their emotional wellbeing and for parents/carers to feel supported in their role as a caregiver.

Solihull Understanding your child with additional needs

This online course is for all parents, grandparents and carers of children who may be neurodivergent, have a physical or learning disability. Building on the principles of nurturing emotional wellbeing shaped by the Solihull Approach, the course will help you to read and manage behaviour, develop your communication and support their development. The course can be translated into over 100 languages and also has an English language audio.

Understanding Your Child

Solihull approach – NHS

Understanding your child with additional needs
A new online course for parents.

This online course is for parents, relatives and friends of children who have a physical or learning disability or may have autistic traits. In the UK, you may be within the SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) system. Some parents describe their child as differently abled or neuroatypical.

It is equivalent to a ten session group. A BIG group with lots of relevant content.
A total of 14 modules; 15 to 20 minutes each.

The course is in two sections:

  • Level 1 – Lays the foundation for understanding your child
  • Level 2 – Looks at some particular aspects of parenting: sleeping and anger management.

Once you’ve finished level 1 you can progress onto level 2 if you’d like.

Some of what the course covers:

  • How your child develops
  • Understanding how your child is feeling
  • Tuning into what your child needs
  • Different styles of parenting
  • Why is sleep important
