Babies and Toddlers: Developing, Learning, Playing

Course description:

This course will help practitioners working with the 0-2s to develop their understanding of children’s early development, how best to support it and to share practical ideas for supporting development. Elinor Goldschmied and Sonia Jackson’s work on heuristic play and treasure baskets will be explored in detail to enable participants to develop and improve heuristic play sessions and to use these to support focused observations.

Outcomes:

  1. Explore some key theories and messages from research regarding what babies and toddlers need in order to grow, learn  and develop
  2. Build on understanding of overall development, including brain development, in babies and toddlers
  3. Know the importance of close relationships for development
  4. Examine the impact of ‘tuning in’ to babies and toddlers, and the challenges of listening to and hearing their voices
  5. Know the importance of using everyday routines as learning opportunities
  6. Discuss and share ideas for appropriate activities, opportunities and experiences for young children
  7. Build on understanding of the importance of sensory play/heuristic play for children’s all-round development, including brain development and for meeting individual needs
  8. Examine the impact of the senses for learning and self-awareness and key research/theories that underpin this understanding
  9. Gain an awareness of what is meant by heuristic play and treasure baskets using the work of Elinor Goldschmied and Sonia Jackson and the role of the adult within this
  10. Identify next steps for own practice
