Audience:

EYFS Practitioners and managers, particularly those working with three and four year olds.

Please note that there will be separate training for childminders at another date and will be tailored more closely to meet childminders’ needs and be at a time when there is an established system for childminders accessing WellComm packs. Course description:

The aim of this course will be to equip practitioners with the skills and knowledge to be able to use the WellComm screening tool both to identify children’s strengths and areas of need and to plan appropriate interventions to support SLC development.

The 'WellComm Speech and Language Toolkit Resource' will be allocated to group settings that do not already have a copy according to Salford WellComm Project team’s records.

Outcomes:

By the end of the session delegates will be:

  • Familiar with the Greater Manchester Strategy in supporting speech, language and communication
  • Aware of the typical patterns and stages of children’s language development in the early years
  • Familiar with the Wellcomm screening tool and be confident in using this to identify children’s communication strengths and areas of need
  • Be aware of a range adult child interaction strategies that support children’s communication development
  • Consider how to make your setting a communication friendly space
