Leaving prison and homeless

The Housing Options Service works closely with prisons and probation services. We provide housing advice and support for people who are at risk of homelessness following release from prison.

What support is provided?

If you are in prison and have nowhere to live on release, we will assess your needs and work with you to try to find a solution.

Salford has a scheme called AFEO (Accommodation For Ex-Offenders), you can be referred into this scheme for help with finding a home if you are leaving prison or have left prison in the last 12 months.

There is a dedicated officer within the Housing Options Service who focusses on homelessness and housing options for people leaving prison, they can:

  • Complete a homelessness assessment for you in prison either face to face, via video link or over the phone
  • Work with you and other agencies to develop a personalised housing plan for your release from prison
  • Offer advice on other services and housing issues

It is important that you or your support worker get in touch as soon as possible so that there is enough time to explore the housing options available to you.

If you are a professional working with someone who is being released from prison and they have nowhere to go, you have a legal duty to refer them for help with housing.

How do I contact them?

The Housing Options Service offers an appointment-based service to people who are threatened with homelessness. People can self-refer to the service by completing the following form or someone can refer another person, with their permission.

Referral form

When the form is submitted the person being referred will be allocated a Homelessness Prevention Officer who will contact them within 3 working days to discuss their situation, provide advice and arrange an assessment where necessary.

People who are homeless today should present at Salford Housing Options where a short initial assessment will be offered to confirm that they are homeless immediately. Where this is the case, a same day full assessment by a Homeless Prevention Officer will be offered.

Individuals or families should only attend the office if they have nowhere to go on the day. Otherwise, they should complete the self-referral form. If an individual or family attends the office but does have somewhere to stay (including temporarily), they will be asked to complete this referral and may need to attend again on a later date.
