Information for Armed Forces personnel

Housing can be worrying for people leaving the armed services (Army, Marine, Naval and Air Forces).

Any veteran who has completed their service in the armed forces within the past five years (or has been medically discharged or if you didn’t tour) will be able to apply to Salford’s Housing Register without the need to have a connection to Salford.

You do not need a local connection to Salford, on Salford Home Search, if you meet the following:

  • Serving or former members of the armed forces who left the service (or was medically discharged) within five years prior to their application.
  • Persons who are serving or who have served in the armed forces, who suffer from a serious injury or disability which is caused due to their service.
  • A partner who is or was living in accommodation provided by the Ministry of Defence and whose former partner was a serviceman whose death was caused in whole or in part to their service.
  • Divorced or separated partners or civil partners of service personnel who need to move out of accommodation provided by the ministry of defence.

In addition, A veterans housing application can be given additional points on the system.

The council has an armed forces champion, please contact Rebecca.holden@salford.gov.uk for further information or phone 0161 607 1618.

Where do I go for help?

You can go in person to the Housing Options Service and ask for the Armed Forces Champion. If you are completing the referral form please make it clear on the form that you are leaving the armed forces.

How do I contact them?

The Housing Options Service offers an appointment-based service to people who are threatened with homelessness. People can self-refer to the service by completing the following form or someone can refer another person, with their permission.

Referral form

When the form is submitted the person being referred will be allocated a Homelessness Prevention Officer who will contact them within 3 working days to discuss their situation, provide advice and arrange an assessment where necessary.

People who are homeless today should present at Salford Housing Options where a short initial assessment will be offered to confirm that they are homeless immediately. Where this is the case, a same day full assessment by a Homeless Prevention Officer will be offered.

Individuals or families should only attend the office if they have nowhere to go on the day. Otherwise, they should complete the self-referral form. If an individual or family attends the office but does have somewhere to stay (including temporarily), they will be asked to complete this referral and may need to attend again on a later date.

Salford Housing Options are located at:
