Residential bike hangars

Salford City Council and Transport for Greater Manchester have provided secure on street bike hangars for residents who have little or no internal space to store bikes to help encourage people to cycle.

What is a bike hangar?

A bike hangar is a lockable and secure unit that can hold up to six bicycles, providing shelter from the weather and security from theft. It is the height, width and length of a small car and takes up about the same amount of space on the street as a car parking space.

Will my bike be secure?

The hangars have recently been upgraded to a keyless app based locking system. Users will be required to download an app and have an internet compatible device to be able to open the hanger. Inside the hangers each space has internal locking points for your bike to lock onto.

How do the locks work?

The locks work via an app based system. Users when registered will be required to download an app to their mobile phone. The app will allow users to unlock the hanger by using the app when near the hanger. The app works on both Android and Apple phones.

Where are the bike hangars located?

We have installed 11 bike hangars in a range of locations. Please see the map attached or look at the list below to find your nearest hangar.

How can I become a member?

The cost for a cycle space is £40 per year. Users must pay in advance and once registered will be sent details of how to access the bike hanger, along with log on details for the app.

If you would like to become a member in the scheme, please complete the register your interest form confirming your details and which cycle hangar you would like to use.

Complete the register your interest form

We will then check to see if there is space within a bike hanger, if your preferred location is already full, we will offer you a space in the nearest alternative hangar or add you to the waiting list.

If there is space, we will direct you to an online form where you can register for the bike hanger and pay the membership fee. Once the fee has been paid we will register you for the app and send you details of how to download and use the app.

We will endeavour to deal with all requests for spaces as soon as possible, but the registration process may take up to a week to complete.

A month before the anniversary you will be asked to renew your membership for the following year. If you do not renew your membership before the anniversary of your joining date, you may lose access to the bike hanger. If your membership isn’t renewed within a month of the anniversary of your join date you may lose your space within the bike hanger and it may be given to another user.

Each member must agree to the terms and conditions of using the bike hanger and be responsible for ensuring the bike hanger is locked each time after use.

I want to join but there is no bike hangar in my neighbourhood – what should I do?

Currently we only 11 hangars, so we haven’t been able to install one in every neighbourhood. We are looking to expand the project and are always keen to hear about ideas for new locations for hangars. Please email us and let us know where you would like to see one installed.

What to do if you spot a problem with a bike hangar

If you see any damage to the bike hanger please email cycling@salford.gov.uk us so we can get it repaired. If you see any attempted thefts or damage please contact the police.
