Residential bike hangars

Salford City Council and Transport for Greater Manchester have developed a scheme to introduce secure bike hangars on streets where residents have little or no internal space to store bikes.

Cycle City Ambition Grant (CCAG) funding has been secured to install a number of these on streets in Salford.

What is a bike hangar?

A bike hangar is a lockable and secure unit that can hold up to six bicycles, providing shelter from the weather and security from theft. It is the height, width and length of a small car and takes up about the same amount of space on the street as a car parking space.

Will my bike be secure?

The hangars will have two levels of security. Residents will be able to lock their bicycle frame inside the hangar using their own D-lock, and the hangar will have a lockable door which can only be accessed using a key allocated to residents who have been designated a space in the hangar.

D lock offer

For those residents who wish to use the residential bike hangars on Marie Street and Silk Street, Salford City Council can offer a free D lock if you become a member of the residential bike hangar scheme.

Where are the bike hangars located?

We have installed 11 bike hangars in a range of locations. Please see the map attached or look at the list below to find your nearest hangar.

How much does it cost?

There is a key deposit of £25, refundable when leaving the scheme. In addition to this, there is an annual membership fee per space, this is £40 per year. Membership fees are payable in advance for each year.

How can I become a member?

If you would like to become a member in the scheme, please email cycling@salford.gov.uk and tell us your name, contact details and preferred bike hangar. We will then be able to send you out the registration forms. If your preferred location is already full, we will offer you a space in the nearest alternative hangar or add you to the waiting list.

I want to join but there is no bike hangar in my neighbourhood – what should I do?

This is a small pilot scheme with only 12 hangars, so we haven’t been able to install one in every neighbourhood. However, if the scheme is successful, we hope to expand the project in the future so are always keen to hear about ideas for new locations for hangars. Please register your interest here and we will keep you informed of future expansion plans.
