Pupil Place Planning

The increasing demand for primary school places has been widely reported, and is being experienced across the country at both local and national level.

Salford began to experience increased demand for primary places in late 2010. The rise in birth rate, along, with an increase in migration has led to increased and on-going demand for places. Since 2011, with the expansion of existing schools, the local authority has created an additional 5000 primary school places (the equivalent of twenty four 1 Form Entry primary schools). Details of completed school expansions and a citywide school primary area plan can be found below.

Whilst Salford has seen a small increase in secondary pupil numbers this has not been as dramatic as what has been experienced across the primary sector. However, as the growth we have seen at primary school level begins to feed through to the secondary sector, there will be the need to create additional spaces. The local authority is currently looking at future options and details of schemes will be published going forward.

As the growth in primary school numbers begins to feed through to the secondary sector, going forward, there will be a need to create additional secondary capacity. Details of school expansions completed to date can be found by clicking on the planning area links below.

  • In terms of future expansions, the local authority will continue to develop options to support a sustainable school estate and will continue to:
  • Meet its statutory duty for providing sufficient schools places across all areas of the city through forward planning and providing, creative, cost effective solutions;
  • Support the creation of neighbourhoods of choice and sustainable communities, where families choose to live, stay, work, and send their children to school;
  • Ensure that parental preferences are met to the greatest extent, providing access to a choice of high quality schools within their local area and enabling siblings and families to stay together;
  • Continue to deliver building solutions which support curriculum delivery and contribute to the City Council’s vision for transforming educational outcomes for all children and young people across the city;
  • Strive to ensure that no pupils (other than by choice), are required to travel further than the statutory distance;
  • Work closely with schools and stakeholders including our Greater Manchester counterparts to deliver agreed outcomes.
