Learning Support Service webinars

Salford Learning Support Service are running a series of webinars designed for individuals looking to develop their knowledge on a range of topics within the area of Special Educational Needs and Disability.

Attendance at these webinars is open to all, and these are free of charge to Salford schools and professionals. However, if you are attending from a school or setting from a different local authority there will be charge of £40. This will be invoiced by Salford City Council after the event.

If you are unable to attend a session for any reason, we ask that you notify us as soon as possible, but at least five working days before. There will be a charge of £40 if you book on the session and fail to attend.

Bespoke training fees

  • 1.5 hour twilight / staff meeting £150
  • Half day £275
  • Full day £525
  • Any twilight longer than 1.5 hours is charged as half a day.

LSS Virtual webinars are free of charge.

Parental learning support service webinars

Autism and anxiety for parents and caregivers

Description

This webinar aims to develop understanding of some of the common underlying causes of anxiety for autistic children and young people. We will share common successful approaches to supporting this anxiety to promote a healthy wellbeing. There will be an opportunity to attend this group later in the academic year (see details for April).

Parental sensory workshop webinar

Description

This series of webinars is designed for parents/carers of primary school aged children who attend a mainstream school in Salford. It is a brief introduction to sensory processing difficulties and the possible reasons behind your child’s behaviours.

Topics covered include:

  • Understanding the reasons for and triggers associated with sensory difficulties (Sensory awareness webinar 1)
  • Sensory advice, tips and strategies (Sensory strategies webinar 2)

You will be attending the webinar with three other households/parents. It will be two sessions delivered over two weeks (one session per week). You will have the opportunity to interact with the presenter and other parents through the video link. The first session will be Sensory Awareness. The second session will be Sensory Strategies. Attendees must attend both webinars.

Autism and social communication team training 2022–2023

Developing listening and attention skills with autistic children (for school staff)

Date and time: 10 January 2023, 2pm to 3pm

This webinar aims to develop an understanding as to why autistic children and young people may face challenges with their listening and attention skills. We will share a range of approaches to support with the development of these skills.

Lego based therapy and structured work stations

Date and time: 17 March 2023, 9.30am to 12 noon

Date and time of follow up session: 26 April 2023, 3.30pm to 4.30pm

Description: This session is aimed at all staff who would like to learn more about setting up Lego based therapy groups in their school. We will look at how to set up the group, the benefits of Lego based therapy and how it could work in your school setting for both primary and secondary schools.

We will also look at how to set up structured work stations, the benefits of having a workstations and how pupils can use workstations in a mainstream classroom.

This session will be practical with opportunities to ask questions about both Lego based therapy and structured work stations.

Effective support for managing anxiety and supporting the wellbeing of autistic children and young people

Description: This webinar aims to develop your awareness and understanding of the common underlying causes of anxiety for autistic children and young people and will introduce useful strategies for supporting anxious pupils in school and promote healthy wellbeing for everyone. Autism and social communication difficulties in the EYFS

Date and time: Tuesday 8 November 2022, 9.30am to 12 noon

Description: This session is aimed at school staff working in the EYFS who support pupils with a diagnosis of autism or those with social communication difficulties. The session covers the four areas of difference of autism and levels of communication for autistic pupils. Delegates will have the opportunity to engage and participate in strategies and activities. There will be a variety of resources available to explore and opportunities to share good practice amongst colleagues.

Supporting transition to secondary school for autistic pupils

Advanced sensory webinar

Description

We offer an Advanced Sensory Training course which is designed for staff supporting a pupil with possible sensory processing difficulties and require more specific training to support the child. The course aim is that participants will have a better understanding of the child’s difficulties and have an understanding of what strategies to put in place. This training is held over two half days.

Fine motor skills webinar

Description

Delivered by a specialist OT this session will focus on skills enabling attendees:

  • to be able to identify children with poor fine motor skills
  • to understand normal fine motor development

  • to understand and apply individualized strategies to improve fine motor skills
  • to identify classroom activities to improve fine motor skills

  • to develop an awareness of sensory processing dysfunction

  • to analyse and consider environmental adaptations to meet the sensory needs of the whole class
  • to develop an awareness of whole class sensory strategies and interventions
  • to develop an understanding of multi-sensory teaching strategies
