The Salford City Mayor’s Charter categories and pledges

The Salford City Mayor’s charter comprises several pledges, focused on three categories, which are:

  • investing in Salford's workforce: creating training and employment opportunities for Salford people
  • being an equal and inclusive employer in Salford: delivering and supporting workforce equality
  • raising standards for businesses and employees across Salford: adopting excellent working practices and conditions

Investing in Salford's workforce: creating training and employment opportunities for Salford people

This commitment involves creating training and employment opportunities for Salford people, particularly those facing the greatest disadvantages. 

Charter supporters will:

  • employ Salford residents
  • create and provide training, work experience and apprenticeship opportunities for Salford residents
  • provide support to raise skills and aspirations in young people by working with schools and colleges to support curriculum development

How can you show your commitment, and what types of activities can you or your business undertake?

  1. Advertise your vacancies through Salford recruitment channels and local recruitment services
  2. Hold or participate in a local jobs and or Salford recruitment event 
  3. Recruit an apprentice
  4. Work with schools and colleges by giving talks about your sector, speaking to staff about how the curriculum links to the world of work, providing interview support or mentoring
  5. Connect with schools and colleges and provide high-quality future talent insights 

Being an equal and inclusive employer in Salford: delivering and supporting workforce equality

This commitment involves taking an active role in respecting and supporting workforce equality and inclusion.

Charter supporters will:

  • actively promote workforce equality and address discrimination, ensuring that sound policies and practices are in place around equality and discrimination
  • provide opportunities for Salford’s diverse communities, ensuring that recruitment and other HR arrangements connect residents from Salford's diverse communities to the opportunities on offer
  • reinforce good practice around equality and diversity in your supply chain, and respect the diversity of Salford communities through responsible business activity

How can you show your commitment, and what types of activities can you or your business undertake?

  1. Become a Disability Confident advocate
  2. Provide a work experience or placement opportunity
  3. Become involved in a traineeship programme for unemployed young people aged 16 to 24 
  4. Allow employees to volunteer to support Salford’s communities
  5. Support the armed forces community by signing up to the Armed Forces Covenant and the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme 

Raising standards for businesses and employees across Salford: adopting excellent working practices and conditions

This commitment involves helping to raise employment standards for employees and businesses across the city, working with employers, trade unions and campaign groups to promote the adoption of the best possible working practices and conditions.

Charter supporters will:

  • pay the Real Living Wage as their minimum wage, as set by the Living Wage Foundation
  • use good employment practices and create a positive working environment by valuing employees' hard work and commitment, using ethical contracts of employment, having sound policies and practices and adequate working conditions
  • encourage a healthy workplace by having clear policies and practices in place that promote and improve health and wellbeing, and address crucial issues such as staff retention and absence management

How can you show your commitment, and what types of activities can you or your business undertake?

  1. Operate fair contracting practices which exclude the use of zero-hour contracts
  2. Have policies in place around diversity, attendance management, work-life balance, volunteering, recognised trade unions links, modern slavery and anti-blacklisting
