Our health protection team provides local specialist support to help prevent and reduce the impact of infectious diseases, hazards, and major emergencies for health, social care and other vulnerable services outside of the hospital. We are involved in surveillance and monitoring of infectious diseases, auditing of health and social care settings such as care homes and GP practices, as well as providing them with training. We provide support to other settings in the community such as, early years and education settings.
Other key areas of expertise include immunisation, cancer screening programmes, outbreak management of diseases and healthcare associated infections (HCAI). We continue to manage ongoing infections with historically well-known diseases such as flu, COVID-19, measles and tuberculosis and more recently the Mpox (Monkeypox) virus.
A key part of the teams role is prevention, we support health and social care providers and commissioners to achieve excellence in all aspects of care relating to infection prevention, infection control and the wider aspects of disease prevention such as cancer screening and vaccination/immunisation.
