EAL, EAL and SEND: Ensuring that we are getting this right

Session content:

A training session for SENCOs, EAL Co-ordinators, Teachers and TA’s.

This training session will focus on English as Additional Language children who are not making expected progress, and what steps schools need to take to ensure that the right provision is put in place to support these children. The objectives of the session will be:

  • Understand the English proficiency journey of an EAL child across all four skills
  • Assessment and Tracking of EAL children
  • Understand reasons why an EAL child might not be making expected progress but is not SEN
  • Induction of International New Arrival pupils and effective communication with parents
  • How to work with interpreters effectively
  • Cultural factors to be aware of when raising SEND with parents/guardians

SENCO Forum – Primary and Secondary

Session content:

The Salford SENCO Forums provide an opportunity for all SENCO’s across the city to meet face to face to network, receive updates from the local authority and participate in additional CPD. We plan to continue to share LA information, invite key services to share updates, develop a consistency of practice and procedure across our Salford schools, and offer training opportunities where appropriate.

It is our aim that SENDCo’s from both Primary and Secondary settings will meet termly, face to face with potential follow up sessions planned via Microsoft Teams. Age phases will split into smaller groups where necessary.

There is no charge to attend the forum and refreshments will be provided.

An agenda will be shared with each attendee one week prior to the Forum date.

SEND in the Mainstream Setting: SEND Guidance and the Adapted Curriculum

Springwood Primary School (co delivered with SALT and SEND Leaders Team)

Session content:

This course has been designed following requests from our mainstream colleagues. With the increasing numbers of pupils with complex additional needs being educated in mainstream settings, this course aims to be a forum to share good practice, resource ideas, tips and strategies. 

It will be co-delivered by teachers from Springwood Primary School alongside Speech and Language Therapy and Salford SEND Leaders. 

  • Session 1: SEND Guidance and the Adapted Curriculum 
  • Session 2: A Purposeful Learning Environment 
  • Session 3: Creating Meaningful Resources 

Each session can be attended as a standalone learning opportunity or they can be booked together as a three session course. 

Target audience: 

The content of the course is aimed at those who work with children with severe and complex additional needs. The course will run over three sessions and can be completed in either the spring or summer terms.

The price quoted is correct at the time of publication and is exclusive of VAT, which will be charged where applicable. Payments should be made to ‘The Link Education Trust.’ Bank details will be on your invoice.

Terms and conditions

Cancellations: We reserve the right to cancel or alter dates of any courses. If a course is cancelled by us then delegates will be moved on to the next available course or a full refund will be offered. If a course is cancelled by the participant, the following will be applied: 

  • A course cancelled 28 days prior to the course date will be fully refunded. 
  • A course cancelled between 7 and 27 days will be charged at 25% 
  • Any course cancelled less than 7 days before the due date will be charged at full price. 
  • Any non-attendance without prior warning will be charged at full price.

Parking: Parking on site is limited. Please be respectful of our neighbours when parking on the surrounding roads. 

Lunch time and refreshments: Lunch will not be provided by the venue, therefore please bring a packed lunch. 

Please note, we do not allow the following products on our school site due to pupil allergies. 

  • Nuts of any type including tree nuts
  • Kiwi fruit 
  • Shellfish Refreshments will be provided as appropriate

Adaptive Teaching - high quality inclusive teaching

Session content:

This session is aimed at supporting school staff to develop their understanding of Adaptive Teaching strategies, exploring how they can be used to support children and young people in class. Throughout the session, delegates will discuss current research about adaptive teaching and how this links to teaching standards and the SEND CoP. Delegates can be given the opportunity to discuss key concerns and how best to support using examples of practice from local settings.

Collective Responsibility

Effective use of in class support (TA/LSA)

Session content:

This session is aimed at teaching staff at all stages of their career. It is also beneficial training for Teaching Assistants / Learning Support Assistants to support pedagogy around the role. The session covers the TA standards, different layers of support (EEF) along with practical guidance on supporting within the classroom.

Exam Access Arrangements

Session content:

This session is aimed at secondary school and post-16 staff to understand the role of the SENCo in access arrangements. The session will cover any changes to JCQ guidelines for the year, relevant forms and JCQ inspections. This session can be delivered face to face, downloaded for self-led delivery and is also available as a narrated download on the SEND Teams network.

Getting to grips with SEN Governance

Session content:

This session is aimed at SEN link governors, Chair/vice chairs and /or the whole governing body/trust. The session will explore how SEND relates to the 3 core functions of effective governance. Delegates will develop a basic awareness of SEND and consider their strategic role in supporting the development of SEND in school.

Understanding the K Code – SEND Banding

Embedding Preparing for Adult Life into the Earliest of Years

Preparation for Adult Life Lead - Learning Support Service

Session content:

This session aims to provide an introduction to Preparation for Adult Life (PfA), exploring the four pillars and how these can be embedded from the earliest years. 

The session will cover how PfA links to the EHCP and annual review process, how to apply the golden thread effectively, and how to develop clear, meaningful PfA outcomes. Throughout, you will have opportunities to reflect on your current practice and consider practical strategies for strengthening PfA within your setting.

Sessions can be tailored to your settings existing knowledge and specific areas of development. The sessions are suitable for all settings, from early years through to post 16.

Duration:

Minimum one hour, session duration is flexible and can be adjusted depending on your setting.
