Walking routes in Salford

There are many great opportunities to walk around the city with lots of green space. Salford has lots of green space with interesting structures, monuments and towns and villages. You can travel between these places on foot, using footpaths which were once used by people travelling to and from work.

There are several walking routes that travel around and through Salford that can be used to explore Salford whatever your ability. 

Hidden gems

The Hidden Gem maps are a series of 9 short to medium circular routes taking in points of interest around different areas of Salford. 

Off the Beaten Track

Salford has an extensive network of traffic free walking and cycle routes which are perfect for leisure, enjoying the wildlife or even a traffic-free way of getting to work. The Looplines and Greenways are multi user routes perfect for getting around Salford or just taking a leisurely stroll.

The Salford Trail

The Salford Trail is a long distance walk of about 50 miles / 80 kilometres entirely within the boundaries of the city of Salford.

The route is varied, going through rural areas and green spaces, with a little road walking in between.

Starting from the cityscape of Salford Quays, the trail passes beside rivers and canals, through country parks, fields, woods and moss lands. It uses footpaths, tracks and disused railway lines known as ‘looplines’. The trail circles around to pass through Kersal, Agecroft, Walkden, Boothstown and Worsley before heading off to Chat Moss, Irlam and Cadishead.

It returns to Salford Quays passing the unique Barton swing aqueduct and Eccles. The trail has been divided into ten sections, each accessible by public transport. Below are the links to the leaflets for each of the sections - and the most recently updated walk directions.

The Kingfisher Trail

The Kingfisher Trail is a scenic 14-mile route connecting the rural West Pennine Moors to the urban centres of Bolton, Bury and Salford. The route follows the path of the River Iwell taking in lots of parks along the way. 

The Irwell Sculpture Trail

The Irwell Sculpture Trail is a 33 mile trail winding its way from Bacup to Salford Quays and featuring over 70 artworks by locally, nationally and internationally renowned artists.
There are 13 clusters which can be explored at a time.

The GM Ringway

The GM Ringway is a 200 miles (322 km) long and falls into four broad sections, each made up of five areas with 20 stages individual stages, which explore all ten boroughs of Greater Manchester, is easily accessible by public transport.

There are three stages that go through Salford:

  • Stage 17 Leigh to Irlam - distance: 10.3 miles
  • Stage 18 Irlam to Altrincham - distance: 10.8 miles 
  • Stage 20 Stretford to Manchester - distance: 8.5 miles

Public rights of way

There are over 300 miles of public footpaths throughout Salford, which are sign posted and can be used for walking.

The GM Walking Festival

The GM Walking Festival is a month long Greater Manchester festival of walking that take place every May every year. There are loads of organised walks to pick from or varying lengths. There are also further links to other walking groups and ideas.

Salford Walking Festival

Salford has its own dedicated walking festival held in October each year. There are loads of different walks throughout October which you can get involved in.

More information on the walking festival will be published on the council’s website before the walking festival.

Go Jauntly

Go Jauntly is a downloadable app with walks around Salford, Greater Manchester and the UK.
Users can follow set routes created by other people or even upload their own routes.

SCL Wellbeing Walks

Salford Wellbeing Walks are free local walks to help you become physically active to help improve your health and wellbeing.

The walks offer a safe, relaxed and sociable environment in which to walk and are designed to help you meet your 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise each week. Perfect for those who would like to become more physically active or perhaps lack the confidence and knowledge about where to walk.
